A Thank You Note From Shawn Walter

IU College Democrats President Shawn Walter is currently interning at Democracy for America headquarters in Burlington, Vermont. In furtherance of our mission to help train grass roots activists, Democracy for Monroe County gave Shawn a matching grant of $100 to help defray his expenses.

In response, Shawn wrote a very gracious letter of thanks to us. With his permission, I am posting it here, because he talks about a very exciting project that is in the works at DFA.

Dear DFMC,

I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for your generous donation that has allowed me to intern for Democracy for America this summer.

While here I will be developing a new training that will focus on youth organizing. This training will be taught all across the nation for years to come. The goal of this is to expand on Governor Dean's 50-State strategy and to help Democrats win the youth vote for years to come.

This training will be used to teach the Congressman, Senators, and maybe even a future President how to organize youth around their cause. Nothing like this has ever been done and very few things have ever been done on the scale that this is going to be unleashed.

Without your aid and friendship I could have never have done this. I came to Bloomington hoping to get involved in politics and in two years I have reached a place where I work side by side with Governor Dean. From the very beginning you have all been kind to me and what I have tried to accomplish.

I still remember the first time I canvassed. It was during the 2007 city elections and Eric Schmitz partnered be up with Chaim and it was that afternoon that set me on the course that led me here. Again, I thank you for all that you have done for me and I look forward to what we will accomplish in the future.

Sincerely,

Shawn Walter
